How Himedi Vets Clinics in Korea — Vision Correction: Bright Eye Clinic Gangnam

Before Carl Zeiss Meditec officially launched the VisuMax 800 in Korea, it selectively introduced the platform to a small number of leading ophthalmology clinics in 2024. Bright Eye Clinic Gangnam was one of them.

ZEISS is a global leader in laser vision correction technology. While Germany leads in equipment, Korean ophthalmologists are known for high surgical volume and extensive clinical experience. This has led to active collaboration, particularly in advancing next-generation procedures.

We first referred Asian patients to BEC starting in the second half of 2024. The outcomes were consistent. It delivered both strong surgical results and a patient experience that aligned with its reputation.

Compared to Asia, the adoption of vision correction in the United States remains low. The key reason, in our view, is concern around safety. After observing hundreds of our Asian patients go through the full process — and seeing consistent satisfaction — we became comfortable introducing BEC to a broader international audience.

Medical Quality & Safety

At BEC Gangnam, Chief Director Hyun Chul Cheon is recognized by peers in global ophthalmology conferences for his extensive experience across both Korean and international patient cases, including those from Asia, North America and Europe.

That breadth of experience is uncommon. Vision correction is not a one-size-fits-all procedure. Corneal structure, eye condition, and patient expectations vary across populations. What stood out to us is that this experience is not treated as volume alone. It informs comparative analysis between Korean and international cases, as well as academic publications and conference presentations. In our view, this reflects a level of clinical maturity where experience is continuously refined and shared.

Clinics with a high volume of international patients are granted this certification, enabling them to support visa issuance more efficiently.

Clinics across the U.S., Europe, and Asia use similar laser platforms. The difference lies in how those tools are used over time, and how consistently clinics invest in introducing the latest platforms and improving them. South Korea’s ophthalmology environment — with the largest vision correction cases in the world — creates conditions for continuous data accumulation and refinement. BEC operates within this system at scale. Decisions become more data-driven, and complex cases are handled with greater consistency.

Pre-surgical evaluation is a critical signal. At BEC, examinations are structured and decisions are based on measurable data. During our recent visit on March 19, 2026, we observed again newly introduced diagnostic equipment being installed, reflecting ongoing investment in improving evaluation accuracy.

Awards at the entrance. Notable ones include a ZEISS award recognizing 1 million procedures and plaques for research comparing international and Korean patient cases.

The clinic recently relocated from the Kyobo Building near Sinnonhyeon Station to a new space near Nonhyeon Station. During our visit on March 19, 2026, we attended the opening and walked through the facility. The intent behind the space was clear to me.

Among Himedi’s four non-negotiables, “privacy by design” is one of the most difficult to execute in vision correction centers, where large-scale equipment and patient flow limit how space can be structured. At Bright Eye Clinic, this constraint has been addressed at a level that is difficult to find elsewhere in Korea.

For many U.S. patients, the experience may feel closer to a hotel lobby than a medical facility. Unlike boutique dermatology clinics, vision correction centers cannot allocate large private spaces per patient. Within those constraints, Bright Eye Clinic has created an environment that reduces anxiety before surgery.

The interior uses calm green and brown tones, with multilingual concierge staff supporting patients throughout the process. Patients can spend time in a cafeteria-style lounge while waiting, which contributes to a more stable overall experience.

Elements throughout the space appear intentionally designed to reduce patient anxiety. At the entrance, awards reflecting the clinic’s medical track record are displayed. Near the operating rooms, a well-worn ZEISS laser system is exhibited almost like an artifact — a quiet signal of accumulated surgical experience. Along the corridors, photographs document the clinic’s presence in global conferences. It has been carefully designed to support patients in making a decision that is often accompanied by uncertainty.

On-the-Ground View

There was a time when people referred to the “top five ophthalmology clinics” in Korea. Even as recently as 2023, this framing was still commonly used. That has started to change.

Since the second half of 2024, BEC Gangnam has taken a more active approach to international expansion. Over the past 1.5 years, we have worked alongside the clinic to host information sessions across the United States, Singapore, Taiwan, and Mongolia. What we observed during this period is that Bright Eye Clinic has begun to differentiate itself more clearly from its peers.

Recognition from global ophthalmologists, combined with a growing base of international patients, has created a different kind of momentum. From our perspective, Bright Eye Clinic is moving beyond the traditional “top five” grouping and establishing its own position. We have been able to observe that transition up close.
