How Himedi Vets Clinics in Korea — Checkup Centers: Hanaro Medical Foundation
Almost every working Korean has heard of Hanaro. That is not why we partnered with them, and for most of this year it was not enough for us to send you there.
Hanaro Medical Foundation and KMI are the two names that dominate health checkups here, and between them they have screened a very large share of the country's office workers. That is why we looked: our customers are not always asking for the hospital that handles the most international patients, but for the place Koreans actually use. Domestic reputation and international readiness are different things, though, and the second does not come with the first.
We did not arrive by cold email. Dr. Rha Koon Ho, who heads Naver's Healthcare Research Institute after two decades on the urology faculty at Yonsei University College of Medicine, introduced us to Hanaro's leadership.

Medical Quality & Safety
Most checkup centers are hospitals that added a screening floor. Hanaro is the other way around — it grew out of a laboratory. It traces to 1983 and Korea's first contract clinical testing center, the business that became Seoul Clinical Laboratories. SCL and Hanaro still sit in the same group: one runs the diagnostics, the other the screening. In 1998 SCL became the first laboratory in Korea accredited by the College of American Pathologists, the body that accredits hospital laboratories across the United States.
That answers a question most patients never think to ask: who runs your blood work, and to whose standard? The lab here is not a vendor the checkup center hired. It is the original business.
Hanaro supplies our Baseline package, a bigger job than the name suggests. Baseline is the layer everything else attaches to — two dozen test categories of bloodwork, imaging and organ screening — and customers build on it with heart, brain and cancer focus areas. Stack all three and the checkup runs past $2,000. Not the cheap option, then, but the foundation, and it has to be right because every add-on is read against it.
Customer Experience
I first visited the Jongno center and met Lee Jae-woon, executive director of the foundation's business strategy office. In February 2026 our first two customers went there. What came back was great.
- Direct English communication. A large center will have staff who handle English directly; what you cannot expect is that every one of them is fluent, and fluency is the wrong thing to measure anyway. What separates one big center from another is how much trouble they take to keep an international patient from feeling out of place. Hanaro went out of its way for ours.
- Ownership. When something needs handling, does one person own it, or does it become somebody else's department? Hanaro's leadership and its business strategy office work directly with each center, so a decision does not stall between them. And when we resumed, the drive coming from management was noticeably stronger than the first time — a determination to take international patients on and to be trusted with them.
- Privacy by design. We will work mainly with two of the three Hanaro centers. Jongno is very large, so Hanaro is building a separate Black Zone there to receive our customers on their own. Hanaro Leaders Healthcare in Gangnam went the other way: Hanaro bought a smaller hospital a few years ago and remodelled it. It has the limits of any Korean checkup center with high efficiency, but it is quieter and cleaner than a big screening floor.
- Price and program transparency, in English, on every channel. What is in the package and what it costs has to be legible in English, and the answer has to be the same whether the patient books directly or through an agency like us. Someone flying eight thousand miles cannot verify anything locally; the consistency is the trust. In February it was not yet laid out that way.
So we did not stop working with Hanaro. We stopped expanding, which for a partner this well known is the harder decision. By the second half of the year the transparency had moved, and the commitment behind it came from management rather than the front desk.
On-the-Ground View
A famous hospital is not automatically a hospital we send you to. That is the whole reason this entry exists. The sequence: get introduced, visit, send our first two customers, decline to grow on two good visits alone, wait, look again, and only then open the volume — most of a year for a brand that would have been the easiest logo on our site in February.
We opened it at the start of August. Twenty days on, roughly a hundred people have been through a Hanaro center with us or are close to booked. We would not have had that in February — not because the clinical side was any different, but because the question our customers ask first, what is in this, what does it cost, is it the same for me, now has an English answer. The waiting is what bought that. We could feel Hanaro’s management’s strong commitment to providing better service for international patients, as well as the passion of their staff.
