Why You Should Visit a Pain Clinic in Korea
One trend I noticed in early 2026 was the growing interest among American visitors in Korean traditional medicine. As English-speaking patients began appearing more often at local clinics that were not yet prepared for international visitors, it seemed clear that a new category was gaining attention. As we enter the second half of 2026, I believe some of this interest may soon extend to Korean pain clinics, which provide non-surgical treatments based on modern medicine.

Many people live with chronic pain or limited mobility. Ultrasound-guided injections, in particular, may leave a strong impression on American patients because the effects can sometimes be felt immediately. To experience this myself, I visited Yonsei SM Anesthesia and Pain Medicine Clinic near Gangnam-gu Office Station in early July 2026. I had experienced pain around my left shoulder and shoulder blade for more than ten years. After my first injection treatment, approximately 90% of the pain disappeared. This was my personal experience, and results will vary by patient and condition. Still, one relatively simple treatment changed the way I thought about pain I had accepted for years.
My first session, including the physician consultation and injection treatment, cost approximately USD 100 and took 1 hour. American visitors already find Korean clinics efficient in both time and cost, and I think the same-day process at a pain clinic may be even more impressive. Based on my experience, a typical visit may follow this process:
- Consultation
- Physical examination
- X-ray and ultrasound
- Physician explanation
- Ultrasound-guided injection
- Physical, manual, and decompression therapy
This process can be particularly useful for short-term travelers. Many Himedi customers already visit Korea for comprehensive health checkups and receive their medical imaging files on a CD or USB. Some pain specialists can review these existing images and use them to provide a more detailed opinion.

Pain clinics in Korea are commonly operated by specialists in orthopedic surgery or anesthesiology and pain medicine. As someone without a medical background, I cannot say that one specialty is better than the other. However, international patients should not be concerned when they see the term “Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine.” In Korea, this specialty has expanded beyond anesthesia used during surgery. Some physicians now focus specifically on diagnosing and treating pain through non-surgical methods. Below are the pain clinics that more American patients visit recently.
- Yonsei SM: run by a single pain medicine specialist, the clinic is known for avoiding steroids and overtreatment. Despite limited English-speaking staff, its international patient base continues to grow.
- Yonsei Ahn: large clinic with five physicians. The chief director explains clearly in English and makes good use of imaging from health checkups. After going viral on TikTok, it began attracting many international patients and now has dedicated English-speaking staff. Located in Bucheon, about an hour from Gangnam by taxi.
- Nucellin: A premium pain clinic in Hannam-dong, led by an orthopedic specialist. It also offers stem cell–based regenerative treatments, and patient reviews highlight the doctor’s expertise and conservative treatment approach.
This approach may fit travelers interested in scientific diagnosis, non-surgical care, wellness, and longevity. Pain is often treated as something we simply learn to live with. My experience reminded me that it may be worth addressing directly. Reducing pain and improving movement can have a meaningful effect on everyday quality of life.
