How Himedi Vets Clinics in Korea — Checkup Centers: Seoul National University Hospital Gangnam Center

SNU Gangnam opened in 2003. The space reflects its history, with many awards displayed.
On March 5, 2026, I asked if I could visit the SNU Gangnam Center. After about a week without a response, I assumed the request would not move forward. But this time we received a positive reply — along with limited permission to capture some footage inside the facility.
I often come across Korean hospitals that are well known among local patients in Korea and neighboring Asian countries, yet remain unfamiliar to American visitors. Usually one of two explanations applies. Either the structure and patient experience do not align with what American patients expect, or the hospital simply has not yet had the opportunity to be introduced to the U.S. market.
Seoul National University Hospital’s Gangnam Center belongs to the latter. The center is regularly used by many of Korea’s successful business leaders, as well as senior figures in politics and finance across Asia. Yet despite its strong reputation locally, it has remained relatively unknown to American visitors.
Medical Quality & Safety
At the SNU Gangnam Center, many examinations are performed by physicians who conduct research and teach at Seoul National University’s medical school. In Korea, patients often refer to these physicians as “professors.”
For decades, Korea’s most competitive medical students have entered Seoul National University College of Medicine, which maintains one of the lowest acceptance rates among medical schools in the country. The affiliated Seoul National University Hospital is widely regarded as one of Korea’s most selective and competitive hospital systems for physicians.

Many doctors at the Gangnam Center belong to this same academic ecosystem — combining clinical practice, research, and medical education. In other words, the same physicians who train the next generation of doctors are the ones interpreting your screening results.
When professors themselves perform procedures such as ultrasound or endoscopy, subtle abnormalities are more likely to be detected during the examination. Diagnostic expertise is present directly at the point of care. If an abnormality is detected, the center typically contacts the patient within two to three days and helps arrange follow-up care at Seoul National University Hospital. When patients visit the hospital later, their electronic medical records from the Gangnam Center are already integrated into the hospital system.
Once Himedi’s American customers understand this service loop, it becomes clear why many Korean entrepreneurs and Asian business leaders choose the SNU Gangnam Center for long-term health management.
Customer Experience
There are two reasons why I personally like the SNU Gangnam Center.

First is accessibility. The center is located next to Yeoksam Station (Line 2) inside the Gangnam Finance Center (GFC). While Korea has many globally competitive university hospitals, this location allows the center to serve a broader range of patients across Korea as well as international visitors. For example, Google’s Korea office is located in the same building. When executives travel to Seoul for business, they can easily schedule a health checkup without even leaving the building.
Second, we generally prefer screening programs that operate as independent centers dedicated entirely to health checkups, rather than programs located within a hospital’s main campus. At a university hospital’s main campus, patients with serious medical conditions naturally receive priority. A dedicated screening center operates differently. Its entire system is designed to optimize the health checkup experience. The SNU Gangnam Center combines this specialized screening structure with full integration into the Seoul National University Hospital system.

The SNU Gangnam Center satisfies Himedi’s core customer experience standards.
Direct English Communication is supported through a dedicated one-on-one interpreter escort service that guides international patients throughout the checkup process.
Privacy by Design can be perceived differently depending on perspective. From the viewpoint of local Korean patients, the Gangnam Center provides a strong sense of privacy. When a respected professor performs an examination, the time and space required for that consultation are naturally respected.
For Americans experiencing a Korean health checkup for the first time, the process may still feel somewhat fast-paced because nearly 90% of patients prefer early morning appointments between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Patients who prioritize privacy can schedule a start time between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m., when the center is significantly quieter.
Clear Ownership of International Patients is managed through the on-site International Medical Service Center, whose staff maintain a high level of professionalism and service mindset.
Price Transparency is straightforward. The center publicly provides brochures on its website explaining the structure and pricing of its packages.
Why More Expensive?
The answer ultimately comes down to two factors: personnel quality and privacy.
In other words, you are not simply paying for the tests — you are paying for who performs and interprets them. The physicians at the center are specialists whom patients often wait weeks or months to see at Seoul National University Hospital.
For Americans visiting Korea for the first time, the process may feel somewhat busy, as most checkups begin between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. after fasting. However, compared with other screening centers in Korea, the level of privacy is objectively higher — one reason why many prominent Korean entrepreneurs and political leaders regularly choose this center.
On-the-Ground View
As a national public institution, Seoul National University Hospital does not actively pursue international marketing like private clinics. Overseas promotion budgets are limited, and filming opportunities were not granted to private companies. As a result, creating the type of photo and video content American audiences rely on has been difficult. For a long time, the only materials available were a small set of official images and package brochures.

March 13, 2026 — I finally had my own checkup at SNU Gangnam and was excited to capture a few photos to introduce the center to our customers.
The center opened in 2003, and the interior reflects that history. Compared with many newer screening centers in Korea, the design feels more classic and understated. Interestingly, I felt this atmosphere often reinforces a sense of institutional stability and trust.
Over the years, I have also noticed that many successful Korean-American entrepreneurs consistently choose this center for their annual health checkups. For them, the decision is simple: when it comes to something as important as health, they prefer the institution they trust most. The SNU name itself is a symbol of trust.
